Major banks and institutions have issued tokenized bonds, including large corporate bond issues brought on-chain and government-linked digital bonds in Europe and elsewhere. Tokenized corporate bonds reached well over a billion dollars in value by 2026, a smaller category than tokenized Treasuries but a real and growing one, with serious financial names involved rather than only crypto-native projects.

The appeal for issuers and investors is efficiency. Faster settlement frees up capital that would otherwise sit waiting for trades to clear. On-chain transfer can widen the pool of potential investors and make the bond easier to use as collateral elsewhere. Programmable features can automate parts of the bond's life, like interest payments, that traditionally require manual processing. For large issuers managing huge volumes, even modest efficiency gains are meaningful.

The risks worth understanding
Tokenized bonds carry every risk of ordinary bonds plus the risks of the tokenized layer. The ordinary risks are real: credit risk, the chance the issuer cannot pay, which is significant for corporate bonds and minimal for major government debt, and interest-rate risk, since a bond's market value falls when prevailing rates rise. These are the fundamental risks of lending, and tokenization does nothing to remove them.
On top sit the tokenized-layer risks: smart-contract risk in the token, custodial and counterparty risk depending on how the bond is held and what your token legally entitles you to, and access restrictions, since these are regulated securities usually limited to qualified investors.
